A Breathing (2024) was developed as an additional piece to Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński’s works about the precarity of Black Breath. The artist’s engagement with breath started with her solo show Seven Scenes at Camera Austria Graz (2022) and has continued to grow with works like Openings (Red, Black, and Green) (2023) and Respire (Liverpool) (2023), which were first presented at the Liverpool Biennial 2023. In “A Breathing”, Kazeem-Kamiński takes up a quote by African-American theorist and writer Christina Sharpe from her book Ordinary Notes (2023). Here, the neon light serves as a signal and a reminder of the centrality of breath and the potentiality of breathing together in a time when Black breath is repeatedly restricted. “A multitude of Black persons gathered, a breathing.”
